Dairy: Goodbye My Friend

I love dairy. Love me some cheese, some ice cream, some butter, and the good Lord knows I can’t live without that heavenly stuff called Cream Cheese and it’s saint of a cousin, Sour Cream.

But I have been.

And it’s been hard.

When Rilyn’s fussiness first started, I heard from a few people that maybe dairy in my diet was to blame and when her fussiness didn’t stop, I finally decided to give the ‘no dairy’ thing a try. Just for a few days, because I loved the stuff and that just couldn’t be the reason my baby is screaming.

Two days into my new diet, we noticed an improvement in Rilyn’s mood. Shucks. (Although she’s still fussy due to a few other things, we do notice a difference whenever I do have dairy.)

So we’re going on almost 4 weeks with mostly no dairy (I keep trying it periodically to see if she’s overcome her aversion to it. That’d be a negative.) and it’s still as hard as ever. You just don’t realize how many things contain milk. I try not to think about all the things I can’t make and eat in the baking department because it makes me want to cry. We’re entering prime baking season, y’all. (You also don’t realize how many products claim to be dairy-free but still have casein in them. Casein is a milk protein. It really strikes me as odd that an item labeled as non-dairy or soy would have casein listed in the ingredients. But, that’s another rant for another time.) It’s also grown increasingly harder for me to plan our weekly menus. Some days I really struggle thinking of new things to make. We can only have spaghetti and roast and potatoes so many times, you know! Also, I try to make things that you can easily add or leave out the cheese, like tacos, to please everyone in my little family. So, if you’ve got any ideas, I’d LOVE to hear them!

I do take comfort in knowing that I won’t have to say goodbye to dairy forever, and when that time comes, I’ve got an ever growing list of items I’ve missed that will be scarfed down ASAP! Funny how you crave the most random things when you know you can’t have them…

Here’s a glimpse at that list, in no particular order:

1. REAL ice cream, not the rice dream or almond “ice cream” stuff.
2. Pizza
3. Panera’s mac and cheese
4. Baked potato soup
5. milk chocolate anything
6. caesar dressing
7. greenbean casserole
8. nachos
9. manicotti
10. fettucini alfredo (my recipe with the crazy amount of cream cheese in the sauce!)

 

Yeah, I’m hungry now.

    I (sorta) feel your pain on the dairy bit. Having a kid with an dairy allergy is not fun, so I can’t imagine what it’s like having to give it up yourself. It’s hard to plan meals without dairy in them, it seems like it’s in everything and forget about making a casserole! Hopefully she’ll grow out of it and you can return to your ice cream and cream cheese eating soon!!
